Takenobu Igarashi

Calendars
December 1, 2018–February 10, 2019
Floor 3

Japanese graphic designer and artist Takenobu Igarashi is perhaps best known in the United States for his letterforms and numbers drawn by hand in the axonometric method — guided by three axes, instead of two — so that the letters appear three-dimensional, like small architecture. For eight years, from 1984 through 1991, Igarashi designed annual calendars, creating 622 unique number designs for each calendar — a remarkable achievement in graphic design. As we move from 2018 into 2019, we look back thirty years to appreciate Igarashi’s exquisite designs for each day of 1988 and 1989.
