Stranger Passing

Collected Portraits by Joel Sternfeld
July 6–October 2, 2001

A renowned figure in contemporary photography, Joel Sternfeld has been at work for more than a decade on his latest series, Stranger Passing. Organized by SFMOMA, this major exhibition features approximately 65 large-scale color photographs, capturing the country and culture of the people Sternfeld encountered during travels throughout the United States between 1985 and 2000. In his own words, Sternfeld sought to render “the end of regionalism, of Main Street, which have been replaced by an automobile-, parking lot-, mall-dominated landscape.” Throughout the series, Sternfeld presents a sense of authentic and original encounters with the world, demonstrating himself to be an acutely engaged, intelligent, and subtle observer of the complexities of our time.
