William Gedney

duplicate of Short Distances and Definite Places
January 21–March 31, 2000

SFMOMA presents the first major museum exhibition to feature work by the recently rediscovered American photographer William Gedney (1932-1989). Focusing on photographs of coal miners and their families in Eastern Kentucky, the hippie scene in San Francisco and Gedney’s home city of Brooklyn, the ninety photographs included in this exhibition demonstrate his rare sensitivity to the figure of the outsider.
