The commemorative art of Kerry James Marshall both pays tribute to the civil rights movement and mourns its lost potential. Kerry James Marshall: Mementos was organized by the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago, and comes to SFMOMA as part of the New Work series. The San Francisco presentation — the first exhibition of Marshall’s work in the Bay Area — is organized by Gary Garrels, SFMOMA Elise S. Haas chief curator and curator of painting and sculpture.
No brochure was produced for this exhibition. A catalogue was published by the Renaissance Society in 1998.
