Don Van Vliet is a self-taught artist who, for the past several years, has dedicated himself to large-scale oil painting. He conveys his deep regard for nature in dynamic compositions executed in a vigorously expressive and fluid painting style; many are filled with discordant, fantastical images such as grimacing demons, skeletons, and animals. This installment of the New Work series marks Van Vliet’s first museum exhibition and offers an interesting parallel to his career as Captain Beefheart, the stage name under which he redefined the boundaries of modern rock music.
