This installment of the New Work series presents recent compositions by leading photorealist painter Robert Bechtle—32 years after the San Francisco–born artist’s first exhibition at SFMOMA. Typically avoiding editorial statements in depictions of familiar scenes, Bechtle’s photograph-to-painting re-creations of parked cars and Bay Area houses and streets position him as a sympathetic but neutral observer of his surroundings.
