Rifts deepen within the Ambersons, an affluent family in decline in the late 1800s, as American society is uprooted through modernization, industrialization, and the emergence of the automobile. The Magnificent Ambersons underwent a hefty studio edit in post-production and destroyed film negatives meant the permanent loss of director Orson Welles’s original vision for his elegiac epic.
