For the fifth season of Modern Cinema, SFMOMA and SFFILM present the films of multi award-winning director Claire Denis, including her latest, Let the Sunshine In, alongside work that has inspired or invigorated her. Commenting on her directing approach, Denis says, “Cinema is not made to give a psychological explanation; for me cinema is montage.” Privileging the visual over the verbal leads to a body of work that is tactile, sensual, and never less than entrancing. Those familiar with her films, including Beau Travail, The Intruder, or her debut feature Chocolat, know that there is no one who sees quite like Denis.
Modern Cinema, co-presented by SFMOMA and SFFILM, is an ongoing film series exploring the dynamic forces interacting between cinema’s past and present.
