Behold Jacob Hashimoto’s room full of kites! Will you make one of your own? Join artist and educator Mariel Paat on an exploration of kite making with rice and tea paper. Experiment with color, shape, and design — your creation does not have to fly!
This program is designed for children ages 4–11 and their adult caregivers, but all ages are welcome.
Mariel Paat is an artist and educator born in Visalia, CA, and based in San Francisco. She received her BA in studio art and art history from San Francisco State University. Her oil paintings are explorations of her identity as a first-generation Filipino American existing within the diaspora. She combines her portraits with specific settings and objects that are reminiscent of her upbringing as a way to preserve her family’s narratives. Her artwork has been on view at the DeYoung Open, Oakland Asian Cultural Center, SOMArts, and Sentro Filipino. She is currently a studio artist at Root Division, and in addition to her practice, she teaches K–8 art at San Francisco Schoolhouse. Mariel has also led art lessons with Galing Bata, a Filipino-centered after-school program in SOMA, and has assisted at YBCA during their free public art workshops.
