Join us for a night of drawing in SFMOMA’s galleries. Get inspired by the artworks on view and put pencil to paper and more in guided, observational drawing led by artists Wally A. Corona, Aleo Landeta, Sun Park, and Craig Calderwood. Walk away with fresh sketches in your sketchpad or on non-traditional surfaces and enjoy the galleries in a whole new way!
Each artist will offer a unique approach to drawing. Craig Calderwood will lead responsive exercises inspired by the artworks and surrounding space, encouraging participants to draw what an artwork makes them feel or their first intuition upon encountering it. Aleo Landeta will guide visitors in drawing one another, while Wally A. Corona will invite participants to experiment with drawing on nontraditional surfaces. Sun Park will explore the expressive possibilities of color, inviting participants to layer colored pencil across richly hued papers, allowing line, tone, and surface to shape each drawing in unexpected ways
Materials will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own sketchpad, pencil and colored pencils.
Born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, Wally A. Corona earned a BFA in Painting and Drawing from California College of the Arts (CCA) in 2023, after his four-year service in the Marine Corps. Corona’s art practice is inspired by graffiti and comic book aesthetics and focused on expanding the act of drawing using simple techniques and accessible materials as a means of cultivating a robust creative practice with minimal financial barriers.
Aleo Landeta (they/them) is a trans and Latine visual artist and educator based in Oakland whose practice spans drawing, painting, installation, and public programming. Their work centers queer joy as liberation, drawing from lived experience, and the communities that have held space for them to live authentically. They have been exhibited at MACLA, Bedford Gallery, Berkeley Art Center, and Jonathan Carver Moore, among others, with work held in the permanent collection of the Bakersfield Museum of Art. Recent support includes the SoEx Alternative Exposure Grant (2025), the King Artist Residency (2024), and the Homebody Fellowship at Ma’s House & BIPOC Art Studio (2022).
Sun Park is an interdisciplinary artist whose work explores the evolution of the self through embodied spirituality. Working across sensory-rich installations, interactive ritual, drawing, ceramics, video, and writing, they construct personal sanctuaries and mythologies that trace their path from white evangelical Christianity into a new reality informed by saju (Korean astrology), trans embodiment, and worldmaking.
Park has exhibited work at San Francisco Art Commission Main Gallery; /room/ (slash gallery); Root Division; 500 Capp Street; Southern Exposure; the Ruby; Kearny Street Workshop (San Francisco); Aggregate Space (Oakland); Alternative Space LOOP (Seoul, Korea), among others. Park is a Creative in Resident at the Ruby (ongoing); a Mentorship and Exhibitions Fellow at SFAC (2024); an Interdisciplinary Writers Lab Fellow at Kearny Street Workshop (2022); and an Asian Pacific Islanders Cultural Center Grantee (2024).
A predominately self-taught artist, Craig Calderwood’s intricate and decorative works are rendered through a personal vernacular of symbols and patterns. Recalling the private languages that underground communities of queer and trans people used for safety for decades, Calderwood develops these patterns and symbols though research into history, personal narratives, and pop cultural moments. They then arrange them into constellations to tell stories both personal and fantasized.
Utilizing low-end materials like fabric paint, polymer clay, found fabrics, and fibre tip pens, Calderwood explores ideas around desire, biodiversity, and otherness. Intentionally working with the tools of the everyday to express a more egalitarian approach to art making. They also look at how material practice forms its own language for safe and coded communication within hostile environments.
