For this special celebration of Bay Area contemporary artists, educators are invited to attend in-person to hear directly from artist Barry McGee. A lauded and central figure in a bicoastal subculture that comprises skaters, graffiti artists, and West Coast surfers, McGee was featured in Season One of Art21’s Art in the Twenty-First Century and has work in SFMOMA’s permanent collection.
After the screening, McGee will talk about works in SFMOMA’s collection and respond to educators’ questions about how his work can be used in classrooms.
This program is a continuation of Art21 and SFMOMA’s long-running virtual teacher workshop series, What Is Contemporary Art? The series explores different aspects of the question, “What is contemporary art?” Each workshop encourages educators to think and work like artists, using thematic, inquiry-driven processes and strategies.
