Welcome to SFMOMA, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. We have developed a Web site that we hope you will find easy to use, informative, and beautiful.

As one of the world's most innovative museums of modern and contemporary art, SFMOMA has had an active Web presence for ten years. During this period we have redesigned our site twice, always with the idea that a museum such as ours should continually strive to improve the ways in which it serves a diverse public. And, as our collective understanding of emerging digital technologies has increased, we felt that perhaps it was time to use the Web to explore our understanding of the museum itself.

We have all become comfortable with the notion that the physical museum space — in our case a magnificent building by the Swiss architect Mario Botta — and the virtual space of the Internet work in a remarkably complementary manner. Like many who have spent time exploring the Web, we also know that there are some programs that make more sense in physical space while others exist more appropriately in this special electronic realm. Our site takes these distinctions to heart.

This site delves into new terrain not only by providing timely and relevant information about visiting and enjoying the physical museum itself — our exhibitions, collections, educational activities, and public programs — but also as home for a special online gallery we call e.space. E.space was created exclusively for the Web and explores new art forms that exist only in cyberspace. E.space projects explore the new forms of storytelling in a space delineated by the personal computer screen, and investigate new models for the transposing of the notion of an online exhibition.

Additionally, we bring works from the white walls of our galleries to online visitors through our searchable online collection and the award-winning programs produced by our Interactive Educational Technologies team. Our flagship program, Making Sense of Modern Art and other periodic exhibition features address many of the questions that we know arise in visitors’ minds as they encounter key artworks in SFMOMA’s collection, as well as the larger issues and personalities that define modern and contemporary art. I invite you to explore these interactive programs, as they bring the dynamism of video, audio and zoom capabilities to a stimulating, and accessible, dialogue about art.

We hope you enjoy your online visit and look forward to welcoming you at the Museum as well.
