The Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson creates works that engage the senses and convey a variety of moods and feelings. His works aim to shift our perspectives and perceptions of the world. In this activity you will select a mood, experience, or phenomena you would like to convey. You will then create a diorama to illustrate your chosen concept.

Look closely

Explore the works of Olafur Eliasson online. Be sure to click on all images, read all documents, watch videos, and use the zoom tool to look closely at the works of art. Choose one of these works and answer the following questions:

  1. How do you think it would feel to be inside the installation that Eliasson has created?
  2. Which of Eliasson's art works include natural elements? Describe them and identify each one and note how they are used.
  3. Which of Eliasson's art works include technological elements? Describe them and identify how technology is used.
  4. How does the element of time play into the work?
  5. Do you imagine that your physical presence in the space might affect your perception of the work?

In this activity you will:

  1. learn about the art of Olafur Eliasson
  2. select a mood, experience, or phenomenon you would like to convey
  3. create a detailed drawing of your bedroom or an imaginary room
  4. alter your original drawing by adding natural materials or changing architectural details
  5. create a diorama of your room with these new additions
  6. present your work to your peers
  7. critique your peers' dioramas
  8. express your thoughts on how creating the diorama influenced your perception of your bedroom and your perception of time and space

You will be graded on:

  1. participation in class discussions
  2. quality, craft, and attention to detail in your artwork
  3. creativity in applying new techniques and experimental methods
  4. participation in the critique of your peers' work
  5. clear use of language in your artist's statement and written reflection
