Olafur Eliasson often integrates technological devices in his artworks. By setting up scientific up devices to experience reality. He encourages viewers to become part of his work. In this activity you will learn about afterimages, reflectors, and the principles underlying perception as presented in the Exploratorium Science Snacks©. You will then create an environment that combines one or two of the phenomena you have learned about.

Look closely

Explore the works of Olafur Eliasson online. Be sure to click on all images, read all documents, watch videos, and use the zoom tool to look closely at the works of art and answer the following questions:

  1. How do you think it would feel to be inside the art work/installation that Eliasson has created?
  2. Have a look at Notion motion, Moss wall, Room for one colour, Sunset kaleidoscope, and Beauty
  3. What are the materials and/or technological elements Eliasson uses in these pieces? Be sure to identify each element and how it is used.
  4. What physical reactions on the part of the spectator are needed to make the works complete? What tasks must be performed by the spectator?
  5. What, if anything, do you think the artist is trying to communicate?

In this activity you will:

  1. learn about Olafur Eliasson's work
  2. review the Exploratorium Science Snacks©
  3. select one or two Exploratorium Science Snacks©
  4. create a model or a small environment to house your scientific exploration
  5. turn this exploration into a work of art
  6. present your work to your peers and critique your peers' work

You will be graded on:

  1. participation in class discussion
  2. quality, craft, and attention to detail in your art work
  3. creativity in applying new techniques and experimental methods
  4. participation in critiquing your peers' work
  5. clarity of artist's statement and written reflection
